Inuit sculptures and carvings
I have always been interested in different ethnicities, cultures and art. My passion for Inuit prints and sculptures is still strong and prevailing, so I have decided to dedicate my first blog entry to it. I came across a book on Eskimo sculpture by George Swinton in a flee market in London, and the artworks in it were mesmerizing. You could fine chapters on figurative carvings (mother and a child, father and a child, wrestlers, hunters and women) as well as animals ( birds, seals, whales, bears). Despite being small, they bear some kind of monumentality, making me think that if they got enlarged they could perfectly well be placed in gardens, galleries or urban architecture (as it is the case of primitivism of a modern artist Henry Moore)
Poprvé jsem se s Inuitským uměním setkala v roce 2001, kdy jsem pobývala v Londýně a na jednom bleším trhu narazila na knihu od George Swintona s názvem Eskymácké sochařství. Ty artefakty v ní byly tak silné a přitom čitelné, zcela žité a autentické v tom, jak Inuité a Aleuti měli odpozorovaný svět zvířat a spojovali ho se světem mýtů a představ. Dohromady mi to dávalo úplnost. Jednoduchost tvarového vyjádření přímo vybízí k možné monumentalitě. Moc by se mi líbily ty sošky v mega měřítku ve veřejném prostoru a v zahradách.
A příště se můžete těšit na nahlédnutí do místa zvané Cape Dorset. Je to příběh o záchraně Inuitů před skázou alkoholem skrze litografii!
